Interesting Read but like others have mentioned something is wrong with the story.1. Why would an intelligent businessman put his life savings into a business deal he found advertised in a dutch newspaper ? That is a novice move.
2. The murder of the bodyguard. Lots to that part missing.
3. He should have left the country and accepted his losses knowing the corruption that takes place in Thailand.
I researched visiting Thailand several times but something keeps me from going. I listen to my instincts.
Easy read and very interesting from the prison perspective but totally predictable from the legal stand point.
Worth the $ if you like prison books which I do.

Good page turner and hard to stop reading once you start. I took one star off because i felt that the protagonist painted himself as a victim in everything. Surely he was victimized by a corrupt system. But first he was the victim of a con, every lawyer he ever had was incompetent, tortured, his wife stole his bail money, his family didn't seem to help after the bond money was stolen, just seemed too much. Personally, i feel it to be mostly true, just seemed a little one sided, but what do i know.
really captivates the reader, hard to put down.
A must-read for anyone interested in human rights, true justice, and human nature. As the author says at the end, this book gives you a chance to look hell in the eye.
This guy was mixing with the wrong people from the beginning but the book was fascinating and the conditions as described were true at that time
I would suggest for any person wanting to commit crime in Thailand to read the book as the prisons are not holiday farms here.
I book fascinating and well worth reading and value for money.

If you are seeking a feel good reading experience DON'T TOUCH THIS BOOK. This book will give you an understanding of human cruelty that you will wish untrue. The one positive outcome for me was an increased appreciation for living in a country, however imperfect, where a certain amount of decency and humanity can be counted on.
This is a true story of how an innocent and possibly naïve man who was caught up in the corrupt Thai legal system and pays very dearly because of being defrauded by unscrupulous and selfish persons who have the Police on their pay roll. I would like to say this is a great story but it really is a sad happy story. A must read.
Let me first say that I'm a sucker for these kind of books - I've read many prison related books due to my involvement in Amnesty International and because I just find this type of raw nonfiction riveting. However, some things in this book just don't add up, it seems. As other reviewers have pointed out, why would the author search for the men who conned him for three years if he wasn't looking for trouble? Even stalking them to some extent. The author also claims he didn't know the man he got into a fight with was killed, yet according to the autopsy the victim was stabbed several times. Hmmm...
Don't get me wrong, I believe Thai prisons are in general seething hell holes and I don't believe anyone should be subjected to its brutality, but I left the book feeling that the author was fudging a few details for perhaps more sympathy??
